Universities have wellness programs for alcohol, mental health, and sexual health. As AI dependency emerges as a significant student wellness concern, forward-thinking campuses are developing programs that address it proactively.
Program components
An effective campus AI wellness program includes awareness campaigns that normalize conversation about AI dependency, workshops during orientation that establish healthy AI habits from day one, faculty training on recognizing student AI dependency, student support services that are aware of technology-related concerns, and peer education programs where trained students lead discussions about AI use.
Integration with existing wellness
Rather than creating an entirely new program, integrate AI wellness into existing student wellness infrastructure. Student support services can include conversations about AI use patterns. Student health education can include AI awareness modules. Residential advisors can be trained to recognize and respond to concerning AI use behaviors.
Faculty engagement
Faculty members are on the front lines of student AI dependency. Provide them with resources to address AI use in their courses: redesigned assignments that require demonstrated understanding, classroom discussions about AI ethics and dependency, and clear policies communicated in syllabi. Faculty who feel supported are more likely to engage constructively with this issue.
Measuring effectiveness
Track program impact through periodic student surveys about AI use patterns, student support service observations, faculty reports on academic integrity concerns, and student self-reported wellbeing measures. This data allows continuous program improvement and demonstrates value to university leadership.
