PTSD is a clinical condition assessed by professionals. It is not something that can be self-diagnosed or determined by reading an article. What AI can do

AI interactions can produce genuine psychological distress. Users have reported deeply unsettling experiences: AI generating disturbing content, AI personas behaving in threatening ways, the sudden loss of a meaningful AI relationship when conversations are deleted, or AI providing harmful advice during vulnerable moments. These experiences can create lasting anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and emotional disturbance.

Vulnerable users at greater risk

For users who already have trauma histories, AI interactions can activate existing trauma responses. An AI that suddenly behaves in an unexpected or threatening way can trigger reactions in someone with prior trauma that are disproportionate to the objective situation but entirely proportionate to their psychological history. The AI didn't cause the trauma, but it reopened the wound.

The attachment disruption

Users who form deep emotional bonds with AI companions face a unique risk: the sudden loss of that relationship through platform changes, content moderation, or account issues. For someone whose primary emotional relationship is with an AI, losing that relationship can produce grief-like responses that are genuine and distressing. The grief is real, even if the relationship was one-sided.

Taking distress seriously

Regardless of labels, the experiences people describe deserve to be taken seriously. Minimizing AI-related psychological harm because "it's just a chatbot" ignores the very real emotional responses that AI interactions can produce.
