You can't look AI in the eye and say "I need some space." AI doesn't respect boundaries the way a person might. It's always available, always willing, always ready for more. Setting boundaries with AI is really about setting boundaries with yourself — and that requires a different approach.
Define what AI is for
Before setting limits, get clear on purpose. What do you want to use AI for? Work tasks? Learning? Creative projects? Make a list. Everything not on the list is off-limits. This shifts the default from "I'll use AI for everything unless I decide not to" to "I'll only use AI for specific purposes." The first framing leads to unlimited use; the second creates natural boundaries.
Create environmental friction
Willpower is unreliable. Environmental design is effective. Log out after each session. Remove AI apps from your home screen. Use browser extensions that limit access to AI platforms during certain hours. Set your phone to grayscale during AI-free times. Each layer of friction gives your intentional mind a chance to intervene before habit takes over.
Establish time boundaries
Designate specific times when AI is allowed and times when it is not. No AI before breakfast. No AI after 9 PM. No AI during meals or social activities. Start with boundaries that feel achievable and expand them as your capacity grows. The goal is not restriction for its own sake but creating space for the parts of life that AI tends to crowd out.
The "can I do this myself?" test
Before each AI interaction, pause and ask: can I do this myself? If the answer is yes, try doing it without AI. This simple habit rebuilds cognitive independence and reveals how many of your AI interactions are driven by convenience rather than genuine need.
Review and adjust
Boundaries need regular review. What worked last month may not work this month. Check in with yourself weekly: Am I sticking to my boundaries? Where am I slipping? What needs to change? This ongoing self-reflection prevents boundaries from becoming abstract rules you've stopped following.
