What kids are actually doing with ChatGPT

Beyond homework (which gets the most attention), children use ChatGPT as a confidant, a storyteller, a game partner, and increasingly as a source of advice about social situations, relationships, and emotional problems. Many children tell AI things they would never tell a parent or teacher. This is both understandable and concerning.

The content concern

While ChatGPT has content filters, they are not foolproof. Children have learned to work around restrictions through creative prompting. Beyond explicit content, there is the subtler risk of AI providing information that is technically accurate but developmentally inappropriate — detailed discussions of topics that children are not yet equipped to process contextually.

The dependency concern

For children, the dependency risk may be more significant than the content risk. Some experts have raised questions about whether a child who learns to process emotions through AI rather than through human relationships may get less practice building social and emotional skills, though this has not been directly studied. These skills are generally built through practice with real people — messy, imperfect, sometimes painful practice that AI neatly eliminates.

Practical steps for parents

Rather than trying to ban AI (which is increasingly impractical), consider engaging with it alongside your child. Ask what they talk about with AI. Show genuine curiosity rather than alarm. Help them understand the difference between an AI that generates responses and a person who genuinely cares. The goal is AI literacy, not AI prohibition.
