Most schools are navigating AI use without a clear policy. Some ban it entirely (and watch students use it anyway). Others embrace it fully (and watch learning erode). An effective policy finds the middle ground that prepares students for an AI world while ensuring they actually learn.

Policy framework

A comprehensive school AI policy should address five areas: permitted and prohibited uses, academic integrity standards, student wellness considerations, staff training requirements, and parent communication protocols. Each area requires specific guidelines that are clear enough to enforce but flexible enough to adapt as technology evolves.

Permitted and prohibited uses

Define when AI use is acceptable (research assistance, concept explanation, study aid) and when it is not (generating submitted work, replacing independent thinking on assessments, using AI during examinations). Be specific: "Students may use AI to understand a concept but may not submit AI-generated text as their own work."

Wellness considerations

Include provisions for awareness of student AI use patterns. Help staff recognize behaviors that may indicate problematic AI use: difficulty working independently, excessive attachment to AI tools, social withdrawal in favor of AI interaction, and distress when AI access is restricted. Establish support channels for students who show concerning patterns.

Parent communication

Parents need to understand both the policy and the rationale behind it. Provide clear communication about what AI use is permitted at school, how parents can monitor AI use at home, and why maintaining independent academic skills matters for their child's future.
