AI addiction doesn't announce itself the way substance addictions often do. There's no visible intoxication, no physical deterioration that others can see. Instead, the signs are behavioral and psychological — subtle at first, then increasingly hard to ignore.

The 12 warning signs

1. First and last thing. AI is the first app you open when you wake up and the last thing you interact with before sleep. The day is bookended by AI.

2. Failed cutbacks. You've tried to use AI less and couldn't sustain it. Rules you set for yourself keep getting broken.

3. Time distortion. You frequently lose track of time during AI interactions. What feels like 20 minutes turns out to be two hours.

4. Cognitive outsourcing. You consult AI before making decisions you used to make independently — from what to eat to how to respond to a text message.

5. Social substitution. AI conversations have replaced human ones. You'd rather talk to a chatbot than call a friend.

6. Withdrawal discomfort. When you can't access AI (internet outage, travel, platform downtime), you feel genuinely anxious or lost.

7. Relationship strain. People in your life have commented on your AI use, or you've hidden the extent of it from them.

8. Neglected responsibilities. Tasks, deadlines, or self-care routines are suffering because AI interactions take priority.

9. Tolerance escalation. You need longer or more intense AI interactions to feel satisfied. Quick answers no longer feel sufficient.

10. Emotional dependency. You rely on AI to regulate your emotions — turning to it when sad, anxious, bored, or stressed.

11. Identity confusion. You're unsure which of your ideas are yours and which came from AI. Your sense of intellectual identity has blurred.

12. Defensive reaction. When someone suggests you use AI too much, your response is disproportionately defensive.

How many is too many?

Recognizing three or more of these patterns is worth paying attention to. The point isn't to create alarm but to create awareness. Patterns that go unexamined tend to deepen over time.
