Seven days without AI feels daunting. One day feels too short to learn anything. A weekend — 48 hours from Friday evening to Sunday evening — hits the sweet spot: long enough to notice your patterns and short enough that you can commit without anxiety.

Friday evening: The preparation

Log out of all AI services. Delete AI apps from your phone (they take seconds to reinstall on Monday if you want them back). Tell someone what you're doing. Make a plan for what you'll do with the time you'd normally spend on AI. Buy a book, plan an activity, invite a friend over. The preparation itself is a valuable exercise in recognizing how much AI occupies your mental planning.

Saturday: The observation day

Notice every impulse to use AI without acting on it. Keep a tally. You may be surprised by how frequently the impulse arises — during idle moments, when a question pops up, when you need to write something, when you feel bored or anxious. Each impulse you observe without acting on is a small exercise in cognitive independence.

Sunday: The discovery day

By Sunday, the acute impulses typically begin to soften. This is when the interesting discoveries happen. You might notice that your own thoughts are more present. You might find yourself reading more deeply, conversing more fully, or simply sitting with your thoughts in a way you haven't in months. These experiences are data points about your relationship with AI.

Monday morning: The reflection

Before reopening any AI tools, spend ten minutes writing about your weekend. What was the hardest moment? What surprised you? What did you miss most? What didn't you miss at all? These reflections inform your ongoing relationship with AI, whether you choose to resume, reduce, or restructure your use.

Understand your baseline before the challenge. Take our quiz on Friday and again on Monday.
