"Is this normal?" It's the question that brings most people to articles like this one. You spend hours with AI every day. You know it's a lot. But is it too much? And where's the line?
Hours aren't the only metric
A programmer using AI for six hours during work is different from someone chatting with an AI companion for six hours instead of sleeping. Duration matters less than impact. Ask: Is AI use affecting my relationships? My sleep? My work? My ability to function without it? If yes, the duration is too much — regardless of the number.
The control test
Can you not use AI for 24 hours without significant discomfort? If the answer is no, that's a signal. Normal tool use doesn't create discomfort when you stop. If the thought of a day without AI produces anxiety, the relationship has moved from use to dependency.
Normal is personal
There's no universal "normal" for AI use, just as there's no universal normal for phone or internet use. What matters is whether your current pattern supports the life you want. If it does, continue. If it doesn't, the awareness you're building right now is the first step toward change.
