Internet and Technology Addicts Anonymous (ITAA) is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other as they work to build healthier relationships with internet and technology use. As AI dependency grows, ITAA has become an increasingly relevant resource.
How ITAA works
ITAA follows the 12-step model used by Alcoholics Anonymous and similar fellowships. Members identify patterns of compulsive technology use, work through structured steps with a sponsor, and attend regular meetings for ongoing support. The program emphasizes personal honesty, peer accountability, and ongoing personal growth.
ITAA and AI dependency
While ITAA was established before generative AI became widespread, its framework applies directly. Compulsive AI chatbot use, AI companion dependency, and cognitive offloading to AI all fall within the patterns ITAA addresses. Many members now specifically discuss AI as part of their technology use challenges.
What meetings look like
ITAA offers online meetings accessible worldwide. Meetings typically last one hour and follow a structured format: opening readings, a topic or speaker, sharing time where members discuss their experiences, and closing. Meetings are anonymous and free. No registration is required — you simply show up.
Who ITAA is for
ITAA is for anyone who feels that technology use — including AI — has become unmanageable. You don't need a formal diagnosis. You don't need to have hit "rock bottom." If your technology use is causing problems in your life and your attempts to control it have been unsuccessful, ITAA may offer the community and structure you need.
